Rainbow Coloured Corridors

This proposal envisions residents who live within the Handshake Building Cluster. People living in Xiasha Village mostly work in the urban area, commuting daily through Shenzhen’s CBD. Although Xiasha Village lies within the CBD, its internal environment and conditions differ considerably from the surrounding area, which tends to elevate the residents’ anxiety.

The gaps between buildings are narrow, and surrounding tall buildings block sunlight, resulting in relatively dark interiors and insufficient daylight between the structures.

Because most rooftops serve as public spaces and vary in character, and given their very close proximity to adjacent rooftops—with the shortest straight-line distance only two to three steps to reach the neighboring building—the study selects Blocks 10 and Blocks 27 of Xiasha Village as pilot sites. Colored glass is used to connect corridors within the spatial form of these rooftop clusters. Different skybridges are designed according to the height differences of the buildings and the morphology of the rooftops, so when people traverse the rooftops they can experience the pleasure of form and color, thereby alleviating anxiety.

Due to the translucency and diffuse reflection properties of glass, its use can, to a certain extent, mitigate issues arising from insufficient social interaction. Moreover, because of its transparency, it enhances the spatial linkage between rooftop and ground-level spaces and strengthens interpersonal connections.
